Any infrastructure project requires co-ordination among different departments of the Government - Highways, Electricity, local body, HR & CE - to ensure that the preparatory works are completed on time and the project is implemented according to the planned schedule.

Joint and regular meetings of representatives of all the departments concerned helps in better co-ordination. One such meeting will be held here on Monday for the Gandhipuram flyover project.

The Rs. 162-crore project has a four-lane flyover for 1.75 km from Nanjappa Road to Sathyamangalam Road, seven-metre wide service lanes on either side of the flyover and a second-level, two-lane flyover from 100 feet road to Avarampalayam junction. The Highways Department proposes to complete the project by April 2017 and the first level of the project by mid-next year.

While the main carriageway works are progressing as per schedule, the other works need to be expedited, point out official sources. Power cables need to be taken underground on 100 feet road and between Gandhipuram junction and GP junction, shops on the roadside and the temples on Nanjappa Road need to be shifted to alternative sites. Though these works are related to the service lane, the entire project can be completed on time only when these are completed at the earliest. The proposal is to complete the first level by mid-next year, say official sources.

The meeting on Monday is expected to sort out the inter-departmental issues and even arrive at a time frame for completion of each work, the sources added.

K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, says co-ordination between different departments is a must for any infrastructure project and action should be taken against officials if there are delays in completion of the work by the respective department. It is the public who are affected because of delays in a project.
