Frequent and unannounced power cuts every day is resulting in at least ₹1,000 loss to the micro units, according to the Tamil Nadu Association of Cottage and Tiny Enterprises.
J. James, president of the Association, said that it is just about 10 days since the monsoon season started and the city is seeing high winds. When there is a power cut, if a micro unit owner calls up the Tangedco official, he is told that an electricity wire has snapped or there is a problem in the transformer. “It takes time for them to identify the problem and set it right and the units in that area go without power for three to four hours. This has become regular,” he says.
Tangedco shuts down sub-stations for maintenance works every month. When the maintenance works are taken up, it should take precautionary measures, check the lines, and ensure there is no power cut on other days. The Tangedco should also have adequate manpower across the city for better maintenance, he adds.
Coimbatore district has nearly 30,000 micro units that employ thousands of workers. The units cannot afford to suffer losses every day because of power cuts.
“We have met the Tangedco officials and spoken to them. We have requested them to attend to repair works without delay and take precautionary measures during the monsoon season,” Mr. James said.
