A free eye camp was organised at the Regional Transport Office in Udhagamandalam, following the completion of Road Safety Awareness Week in the Nilgiris.

A press release from the RTO stated that the event was inaugurated by Rajya Sabha MP K.R. Arjunan.

At the event, Mr. Arjunan said that there had been a reduction in the number of road accidents across the State by 24 % from 2017. He said that while 16,157 people lost their lives in road accidents in 2017, the number of deaths reduced to 12,216 last year.

He said that the Government has taken steps to ensure that road accident victims had access to emergency medical care, while committees had been formed to make sure that road rules were being adhered to and action was taken against violators.

Officials from the Road Transport Office said that awareness programmes would be undertaken to advise people to follow road rules. They said that special campaigns would be undertaken to ensure that two-wheeler riders wore helmets. Officials from the Road Transport Office and the Revenue Department attended the event.
