Police slapped provisions of the Goondas Act on the four persons who were arrested in July for illegally sourcing and selling opioid drugs. The action was initiated based on an order issued by Police Commissioner K. Periaiah.
The four accused Joy Immanuel (28) of Bengaluru, Muhammed Shihab (22) of Saibaba Colony, Sulfikar Ali (24) of Kuniyamuthur and Mohammed Anas (24) of Ukkadam were detained under provisions of the Goondas Act on Saturday. They were arrested by a team of police led by inspector T. Sivakumar and V. Ganeshkumar of the Kattoor police station on July 24 based on specific information. The police had come to know that a group of youngsters were sourcing and selling opioid drugs among students and others.
When arrested, the police had found diazepam, a tranquilliser used to relieve anxiety and relax muscles, and pethidine, a synthetic narcotic drug used to treat pain, in their possession.
The investigation by the police found that Immanuel headed the group in sourcing opioids from pharmacies and hospitals for the alleged trade.
