Former MLA passes away

A. Subramaniam, freedom fighter, former union leader, and ex-MLA, passed away on Wednesday after a brief illness. He was 93 years old.

Mr. Subramaniam played an active part in Quit India Movement and had served jail term. He was the general secretary of Coimbatore District Mill Workers Union founded by freedom fighter N.G. Ramaswamy for 58 years. He was also the secretary of Joint Action Council of All Mill Workers Unions for 35 years.

He was elected All India President of Hind Mazdoor Sabha three times and was the secretary of HMS State unit for 40 years. He was instrumental in founding and linking various HMS associated units in Tamil Nadu. He also served as the secretary of Thiyagi. N.G.Ramaswamy Memorial Higher Secondary School for 35 years. He was elected to the State Legislative Assembly from Singanallur constituency as a Praja Socialist Party candidate in 1971.
