‘Follow NHRC norms for post-mortem examination’

June 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:37 am IST - COIMBATORE:

People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) led by its district president M. Balachander petitioned Principal District Judge of Coimbatore R. Pongiappan and City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan on Thursday seeking a judicial probe into the death of convict A. Karupasamy at the Coimbatore Central Prison earlier that day.

In their petition, the organisation asked the authorities to conduct the post-mortem examination according to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) norms in the case of death under suspicion. Mr. Balachander said that post-mortem examination should be conducted in the presence of a magistrate and the entire proceedings should also be video recorded.

The post-mortem examination on the dead convict was not conducted on Thursday.

Sources in the Coimbatore medical College Hospital said that it would be conducted at the hospital on Friday.
