Flying squads seize twoair rifles, tobacco products

The election flying squads seized ₹5 lakh and two air rifles from a van belonging to a security services agency during a vehicle check at Lakshmi Nagar on Vadavalli – Thodnamuthur road on Thursday.

Officials said that the money was being transported from one branch of a private bank to another. While the money was returned to the security services agency after they produced valid documents, the flying squad seized the two air rifles as they did not have any documents, said an official.

Another flying squad during a vehicle check at Gandhipuram on Thursday morning seized 15 kg of banned tobacco products. Officials said that packets of prohibited tobacco products were seized from a car, which had come from Thomas Street near Ukkadam.

The passengers of the car informed the police that they had bought the gutka from a trader on Thomas Street.

Two withdraw nominations

One candidate each from Coimbatore and Pollachi Lok Sabha constituencies on Thursday withdrew their nominations to contest in the general election.

Independent candidates R. Ramalingam from Coimbatore constituency and Sukumar K. from Pollachi constituency withdrew their nominations, said a press release issued by Returning Officers of the two constituencies.

With the withdrawal of two nominations, the number of candidates in the fray has reduced to 14 in Coimbatore and 16 in Pollachi constituencies.
