The Coimbatore Corporation on Saturday sealed five shops near the VOC Park for violations.

According to sources in the civic body, the persons who had taken on lease the five Corporation shops had built additional, permanent structures, which were illegal.

Following an inspection by Mayor S.M. Velusamy, Commissioner T.K. Ponnusamy and other senior officials, the Town Planning Wing of the civic body sealed the shops and also removed the hoardings that they had erected.

The sources said that the civic body had leased out five shops, each of which measures around 160 sq.ft.

In addition to that, the persons who had taken on lease the shops had built additional structures, which invited the authorities’ action. The sources also said that the Town Planning Wing officials had also initiated action against a private builder in Sowripalayam. The builder had built a club house and swimming pool in the area he had earmarked for the Corporation’s use.

The officials said that the builder could have maintained the area without making any construction. But his constructing the club house and swimming pool was against rules. The officials had asked their workers to fill the pool with earth and seal the club house.

The Saturday's action follows a series of action that the civic body had initiated in the recent past.
