Farmers meet to plan for agitation against toll plaza

Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangam has convened a meeting on July 22 at Periyanaickenpalayam to plan a massive demonstration to oppose land acquisition for the proposed alignment of the Kangeyampalayam – Neelambur – Mettupalayam bypass road and the proposed toll plaza.

Talking to reporters, president of the Sangam, M.R. Sivasamy said that the alignment of the proposed bypass road would only affect agriculture and buildings. The alignment would also increase the distance between Coimbatore and Mettupalayam as well as travelling time.

The alignment, instead of benefiting the motorists, would only benefit industrialists and those having huge land holdings along the alignment.

As per the proposed alignment, the existing Mettupalayam Road will be converted into a bypass road for nearly 5.5 km along the Gas Company, Bilichi, Karamadai, Gandhi Nagar and Teachers Colony. This alignment will result in the users of the existing road being forced to pay toll fee.

The association recalled the suggestion of the former Coimbatore Collector P. Umanath, who called for laying a bypass with the alignment from Saravanampatty directly reaching Mettupalayam without cutting across the existing road. As a result, land acquisition in 16 panchayats from Vilankurichi to Odanthurai has been put on hold.

Now, there is a move to expedite the land acquisition even in these panchayats.

If the official machinery went ahead with the proposal, it would result in a setback to 5,000 acres of agricultural land and demolition of 2,000 buildings.
