Environmentalists, employees of State Bank of India, Coimbatore, and workers from the Coimbatore Corporation cleaned the Muthannan Tank on Monday as part of Gandhi Jayanti celebrations.
According to the Environmentalist Foundation of India, its volunteers, those from the Kovai Kulangal Pathugappu Amaipu, SBI employees and conservancy workers from the Corporation started the operations around 7.30 a.m. and went on for around three hours.
From the tank’s bund, the volunteers pulled out plastic and other non-biodegradable waste using rakes and transported those to a lorry and tractor the Corporation had provided.
At the end of the cleaning drive, they were able to fill both the vehicles with wastes, said G. Sanjay Prasad of the Environmentalist Foundation of India.
K.R. Aswath, a student volunteer, said he along with friends joined the drive because he wanted to see the tank clean and contribute his bit for the city’s environment. State Bank of India Deputy General Manager R.S. Ramesh said that the bank staff participated in the drive and provided cleaning equipment as the bank employees had been participating in such initiatives across the country in response to the call given by the Central Government under the Swachh Bharat programme.
