Engineering losing sheen among toppers

Most toppers in Coimbatore opt for commerce

May 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - COIMBATORE:

Until very recently, the first question posed to toppers in Plus Two public examination was about the discipline in engineering that they were planning to opt for. Not anymore. For, none of the toppers in the district have opted for engineering.

Most of them are from the commerce group and plan to pursue B.Com., with aspirations of becoming Chartered Accountants (C.A.).

Leading the way is L.B. Nivetha of Sri Sowdeswari Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School, who scored 1,192 to achieve the State and District first ranks. She says the country has very few Chartered Accountants.

Further, in a lighter vein, she says her dream is to get a blue collar job, which C.A. will ensure. She was never interested in engineering even from her Class X, she says, adding that her parents also did not pressure her.

C. Amna Shanavas of Vidhya Niketan Matriculation Higher Secondary School, who scored 1,190 to become the district topper in other languages category, says she always wanted to enter the corporate world and C.A. was the first step.

“In the long term, I want to pursue MBA in India. I have no plans for going abroad as our country has some of the best educational institutions,” she adds.

K. Vishnupriya of Bharathi Matriculation Higher Secondary School, who scored 1189 to come district second in other language category and N. Ponmala of G.R.G. Matriculation Higher Secondary School, district third with 1,186, are also convinced that C.A. is where their future lies.

The only course other than C.A. to enthuse the toppers was M.B.B.S. Aji Antony of Suguna RIP.V. Matriculation Higher Secondary School, who also scored 1,190 to share the district top rank in other language category, says he intends to pursue a career in medicine. Similarly, G.S. Abhinaya of Vidyaa Vikas Matriculation Higher Secondary School, district second with 1,188 marks, also wants to pursue medicine. For K.S. Pavithra of G.R.G. Matriculation Higher Secondary School, who scored 1,186 to share the district third rank, medicine runs in the family as both her father and her elder brother are doctors.
