A male elephant that had been roaming around with an infammation in its mouth was found dead at Gobanari near Periyanaickenpalayam here on Tuesday.

Forest Department officials said that the elephant was aged around six.

The carcass of the elephant was found at Koodapatti beat of Gobanari west circle coming under Periyanaickenpalayam range on the banks of Bhavani river, not very far from the Kerala boarder, around 9.15 a.m.

District Forest Officer D. Venkatesh said that the elephant was unable to consume food due to the inflammation in its mouth.

Veterinary surgeon N.S. Manoharan carried out the post-mortem examination of the carcass. In another incident, remains of a female elephant was found in Sirumugai forest range on Tuesday.

Officials said that the carcass was found deep inside Pethikuttai resereve forest during a patrol. The deceased elephant must be aged around 15. The carcass was around three-months-old.
