On Sunday, over 100 volunteers cleared the garbage at the ghat

More than 10 organisations have joined together to revive the Padithurai (ghat) at Perur where River Noyyal is currently in a state of neglect, accumulated with trash and silt.

The joint initiative under the banner Perur Padithurai Pathukappu Iyakkam will soon come up with a project to revive the ghat and make the place conducive for devotees to perform rituals.

On Sunday, more than 100 volunteers cleared the garbage accumulated at the ghat.

“Now, sewage drained into the ghat is flowing in the reverse direction as garbage accumulated in the dry riverbed has blocked the natural flow. As a first step, the garbage were removed manually by volunteers. The silt will have to be removed gradually,” said R. Manikandan, one of the coordinators of Perur Padithurai Pathukappu Iyakkam.

After preparing the project, the joint initiative will seek the support of sponsors for works like desilting.

The silt accumulated on the riverbed will have to be removed up to the Devi Sirai anaicut.

“Majority of the trash dumped in the ghat were plastic and clothes. The volunteers created awareness among shops near the ghat and those in Perur town on the ban on single-use plastic items and against littering. A bin has been placed at the ghat,” said Selvaraj P.K., another coordinator of Perur Padithurai Pathukappu Iyakkam.

S.P. Velumani, Minister for Municipal Administration and Rural Development, the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, the Public Works Department and the Perur Town Panchayat have extended support to the initiative.

Apart from members from 10-odd supporting organisations, conservancy workers and residents of Perur took part in the cleaning drive held on Sunday.
