As temperature soars, the demand for earthen pots and water bottles is on the rise in the city.

Though most of the households own refrigerators, people still prefer to drink water from earthen pots during summer. Keeping in mind the hygiene aspect, the pots now come with taps for people who do not like dipping glasses in the pot.

The State-wide ban on plastic products from January 1 has also encouraged people to shun plastic water bottles and switch over to clay-made bottles. “Though the price of clay bottles is on the higher side, consuming water from an eco-friendly container is good for health”, says P. Bhuvaneswari of Kallukadaimedu. The bottle itself serves as a natural cooling agent, she says.

The earthen wares are being sold along the roadside on Brough Road, Sathy Road, Kollampalayam and other places in the city with prices ranging from ₹ 125 to ₹ 450. Non-availability of quality clay and drop in pot makers are the reasons for rise in cost of earthen pots, traders say.

The pots with tap are in good demand and the price varies depending upon the bargaining power, says a seller at Kollampalayam. Sales have improved in the past two weeks and will continue for another two months. “Till May, when the temperature is at the maximum, people will buy pots”, she adds.
