Dumpyard to become park

Closure of the site is being done at a cost of ₹20.58 crore

The Salem Corporation will soon renovate the Erumapalayam dumpyard into a place where people could unwind themselves within city limits.

The dumpyard, which has been in use for about 75 years, until 2011, would soon be turned into an eco-friendly park. Under the Smart Cities Mission, the Corporation would camouflage the waste dumped at Erumapalayam under several tiers of green cover.

Inspired from Tirunelveli Corporation, this innovative method of garbage handling saves the Corporation several acres of land and it would also offer public a green space within the city limits.

The scientific closure of the dump site is being done at a cost of ₹20.58 crore. Using this method, the Corporation would be able to contract solid waste dumped in 19.33 acres of land to 6.7 acres of land and it would closed scientifically with green cover.

“The converted land would be developed into three tiers of green cover with facilities like open play area, an open gym, jogger’s path and many others,” said a senior official of the Corporation.

He added that the Corporation would be able to save over 12 acres of land through this method.

Corporation Commissioner R. Sadheesh said, “Besides saving several acres of land, through this, we would be able to stop the pollution of groundwater in the area. The economic value of land in the region would also increase. The space would also act as a recreational area within city limits for the public here who are otherwise forced to travel up to Yercaud to relax.”
