Drugs worth approximately ₹1.77 crore were seized in the first five days of the State-wide drive against code-named ‘Operation Ganja Vettai-2.0’, said Director General of Police (DGP) C. Sylendra Babu in Coimbatore on Saturday.

The police arrested 3,187 persons in the drive and seized 102 vehicles belonging to the accused in the drive that was launched on March 28, said the DGP who chaired a review meeting of top police officers from the Coimbatore range, Coimbatore and Tiruppur city police commissionerates..

Mr. Babu directed officers to take steps to slap provisions of the Goondas Act on drug peddlers and maintain the law and order by eliminating anti-social activities and rowdyism in their jurisdictions. He also urged the officers to assist youths to come out of addiction to drugs and other substances through counselling.

He instructed the force not to indulge in violence or to treat the public in disrespectful manner. Incidents like Sattankulam custodial deaths are bad examples of policing. Senior officers should also learn to behave in a decent manner with their subordinates, he said.

In the absence of Station House Officers (SHOs), receptionists on duty should collect details from petitioners who visit stations and report important complaints to the SHOs at the earliest. Police personnel should not pass unwanted comments to parents who come to stations to report missing children or other sensitive issues.

Inspector General of Police (West Zone) R. Sudhakar, Tirupur City Police Commissioner A.G. Babu, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Coimbatore range) M.S. Muthusamy, Superintendents of Police of four districts, Deputy Commissioners of Police and other senior police officers attended the review meeting. He also felicitated police personnel who exhibited excellence in service at the meeting.
