The death of K. Sanjeevi (24), a remand prisoner, after he was admitted to the District Headquarters hospital, created tense moments here on Friday.

Sanjeevi was arrested by 15 Velampalayam police in connection with the theft of fabric rolls from a textile unit on December 29.

He was remanded in judicial custody and lodged at the Tirupur sub-jail.

Custodial torture

Relatives of Sanjeevi, who came to the hospital, alleged that custodial torture had caused the death.

“Our son was in good health before the police took him into custody,” parents of the deceased told The Hindu .

Joint Director of Health (in-charge) V.N.K. Keshavan said that Sanjeevi, when admitted to the hospital, had cough with blood. “His blood vessels were found ruptured. Complete cause of death can be ascertained only after post-mortem examination,” he said.

Inquiry

Meanwhile, a magisterial inquiry had commenced on the day. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) R. Thirunavukkarasu told The Hindu that “there was no custodial excess,” he said.
