Principal District Judge S.Kumaraguru said that the investigations of cyber crimes required special set of skills and the legal system was struggling with increasing number of cyber cases.
Mr. Kumaraguru was talking on the sidelines of the inauguration of National Cyber Defence Research Centre at Sona College of technology here on Thursday.
Mr. Kumaraguru said, “Cyber crime investigations need special set of skills, tools and procedure which most police personnel are not equipped with.”
He added that administration authorities, civil servants and judicial authorities lacked the required knowledge about cyber security and it posed a perpetual risk in future with more and more transactions getting shifted into cyber space.
Mr. Kumaraguru said that according to a statistics, age group 18-30 accounted for the highest number of the cyber crimes in the country.
The National Cyber Defence Research Centre dedicated to Internet of Things security was inaugurated at the college on Thursday.
MoU signed
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Thyagu Valliappa, vice-chairman, Sona Group of Institutions, and E. Khalieraaj, additional director deneral, National Cyber Safety and Security Standards.
Mr. Khalieraaj said that in cyber crime, they lacked proper support from social media platforms as their servers were abroad.
He added that he had made suggestions to the Prime Minister to appoint certain officers to monitor social media platforms and Google and he was hopeful that within this Parliament session essential cyber laws would be passed.
Special courts
“We need special courts to handle cyber crime cases and judicial authorities appointed in cyber domain to handle such cases,” he said and added that he had a proposal for setting up such special courts for the purpose in metro cities.
