Couple arrested on charges of land grabbing

A couple from North Garden area of Ganapathy were arrested here on Friday night on charges forging a document and taking possession of 80 cents land.

According to S. Rajeshwari, Inspector of Police attached to the anti-land grabbing wing of the Coimbatore City Police, the couple Marudhachalam (63) and his wife Visalakshi (50) had allegedly registered 80 cents belonging to their neighbour Velusamy along with their portion of 86 cents recently. The couple had earlier bought the 86 cents from the Siddhapudur Branch of a nationalised bank recently through auction.

It was alleged that the documents submitted by a previous debtor was tampered by the purchaser.

On the basis of a complaint lodged by Velusamy to the Police Commissioner K. Periaiah, the anti-land grabbing cell of the city police registered a case and arrested the couple.

They also searched for the branch manager, sub-registrar, document writer and two other witnesses signed in the tampered documents.

A case has been registered under sections 423 (fraudulent execution of deed of transfer containing false statement of consideration), 448 (tresspass), 470 (forging document), 471 (used as genuine forged document) of IPC and section 34 of Cr.PC (criminal act for common intention).

The couple were produced before the Judicial Magistrate II on Friday and were remanded in judicial custody.
