A group of CITU-affiliated sanitary workers, overhead tank operators and drivers employed with Tirupur Corporation resorted to fast in Tirupur on Friday to highlight their demands for substantial salaries and for steps to prevent exploitations at the workplace.
K. Rangaraj, district assistant secretary of CITU, said the sanitary workers, tank operators and lorry drivers who were merged with the Corporation workforce following the expansion of city limits by amalgamating adjacent two municipalities and eight village panchayats, were still given only consolidated monthly pay.
“After the merger, they should have been disbursed pay scales on a par with the other Corporation staff in the respective cadres,” he added.
According to him, the affected overhead water tank operators are given a consolidated pay packet of Rs 2,000 every month.
“With this paltry amount, how can one run a family in an expensive city like Tirupur?” he asked.
The agitators alleged that some senior Corporation officials were constantly forcing them to carry out works like collection of tax arrears that were totally unrelated to their designated profession.
