Urging the Corporation to reduce the property tax and also not to dig the newly laid roads for various works, members of Erode Tax Payers’ Association and various organisations submitted petition to the Corporation Commissioner here recently.

The petition said that roads in the city were dug for under ground sewerage scheme and also for laying drinking water pipelines. After the works, roads were re-laid at a total cost of ₹ 100 crore.

However, the newly laid roads were again dug for giving house service connection to connect the pipelines with the main drainage channels. The petition said that due to poor planning, the roads were again dug and will not be re-laid in the coming months.

The petition said the re-laying takes years causing much hardship to the road users and residents.

The petition said that the UGD works were not fully completed in the Corporation limited and hence house service connections should not be given now.

The petition also urged the Corporation to reduce the property tax that was hiked by 100% affecting the owners and the tenants. They also wanted the civic body not to collect the garbage collection tax and also the UGD maintenance charges from the residents. The petition wanted the damaged roads to be re-laid under the smart city mission scheme.
