Finally, the Coimbatore Smart Cities Ltd. (CSCL) has decided to take up development of Kurichi Tank under the Smart Cities Mission. The CSCL took the decision at the board meeting it held at the Coimbatore Corporation office in Town Hall on Friday.

The CSCL Managing Director and Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner Sravan Kumar Jatavath told The Hindu that the company, a special purpose vehicle created to implement the Smart Cities Mission projects, would take up the work at ₹50 crore.

The move to take up the tank for development comes after a year or two when the CSCL through the Corporation has been going back and forth to wrest control of the tank from the Public Works Department (PWD).

The Corporation initially wanted the Kurichi Tank to be developed along with the eight tanks under its control under the Smart Cities Mission but gave up because it could not obtain a no-objection certificate from the from the PWD.

It made a renewed attempt by taking steps to initiate discussion between the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department secretary and his counterpart in the PWD. The result of this attempt is not yet known.

Meanwhile, the Corporation seems to have succeeded in getting the Government’s nod to take up work to develop the tank, as sources in the Corporation said it had received administrative sanction for the project.

The administration sanction would pave way for the preparation of a detailed project report, which would state in detail the various components of the work, their location on the tank bund and the estimated cost of each of the components.

The proposal was for developing a walkers' path/bicycling track on the bund, for a length of 5 km, a children’s play area and treatment plant to recycle the sewage flowing into the tank., the sources said and added that the CSCL would spend a sum for strengthening the bund.

Commenting on the development, Kurichi Kulam Paathugaappu Iyakkam general secretary P. Arumugam said the Corporation’s move to include the Kurichi Tank for development was a welcome step as people would be drawn towards the water body and that would lead to its conservation.

The additional pleasing news was the Corporation also planning to construct treatment plants to treat the sewage flowing into the tank. This would restrict the growth of water weeds.
