The three lorries brought back to the city by the Coimbatore Corporation from Chennai a couple of months ago continue to remain idle on its Bharathi Park compound, as very little progress has been made to get the vehicles registered.
The corporation brought back the lorry chassis after almost 10 years of purchase in 2004.
They were to be used to collect wastes. Four chassis were sent to Chennai for body building. The civic body got one of the lorries back. In the meantime, the temporary registration certificates issued 10 years ago expired, and the vehicles lost their road worthiness.
Till date no effort has been taken to get the vehicles registered, said sources familiar with the matter. As an initial step, a committee comprising an automobile expert from the State Government’s automobile workshop, and a faculty from the Government College of Technology has to be constituted. It has not been done.
If left unattended in the rain and shine, the vehicles will have to be sold for scrap, the sources added.
A senior officer, however, said on condition of anonymity that efforts were on to get the vehicles registered.
