Corporation engineers’ morale down as senior officers punished

The morale of the Coimbatore Corporation engineers seems to be down as in the recent past two senior engineers were “punished” for taking on the civic body, which ranged from suspension to even transfer.

According to sources in the engineering section, a senior engineer was placed under suspension sometime in September last year on charges that he did not initiate efforts to bring back lorries that were sent several years ago for body building to a Chennai company.

The charges against the engineer were frivolous and that an old file pertaining to business done more than 10 years ago was dusted up because he took the corporation to court over the appointment of City Engineer. After harassing the engineer for nearly six months, the charges were found to be unsubstantiated and he was allowed to retire after being exonerated.

Now, another engineer, also in the rank of an executive engineer, has been transferred.

He was sent to a civic body in Tuticorin because he too took the corporation to court over City Engineer appointment and asking for his candidature to be considered.

The sources say that these actions could not be construed as mere coincidence. There seems to be intense pressure and lobbying for the post because the City Engineer oversees projects worth several lakhs.

They say that they want the corporation to come clean on the issue, treat engineers in a fair and dignified manner, not play vendetta politics for going to court or politicise the appointment. The sources said that the reinstated engineer was even denied a vehicle to execute his works, which pointed to vendetta.

Senior officials, on condition of anonymity, deny the engineers’ allegations. The shortage of vehicles was the reason for the engineer not getting one and that there was no politics behind it. As for the second engineer’s transfer, it was a decision taken at Chennai.

The officials point out that in the past there have been several instances of the civic body employees approaching the court for redress of grievances, and on all those occasions, there have not been any “vindictive action”. They add that with the retirement of two engineers and the existing vacancy going up, the civic body was taking up with the State Government the need for appointment.
