Corporation eases water connection charges for apartments

October 20, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - COIMBATORE:

Coimbatore Corporation has brought down the water connection charges for bulk connections for apartments.

A resolution passed by it at its urgent meeting on Monday said that the civic body had been collecting Rs. 5,000 for bulk connection until August 2013.

Thereafter, at a Council meeting, it fixed Rs. 10,000 a flat for bulk connections given to apartments. The revised charges came into effect on October 1, 2013. This did not go down well with apartment owners, who requested the charges be reduced. After due consideration, the civic body shall henceforth collect revised bulk connection charges. The Corporation also decided to revert to the old system of nominating plumbers for executing new water connections. A resolution the council passed following representations from councillors will ensure that water supply connection applicants do not get plumbers allotted in a randomised manner.

The councillor or official concerned will have a say in which plumber will execute the work for the applicants in a ward.

The councillors reasoned that when Corporation allotted plumbers in a random fashion, there was no accountability; there was no fixed charges and many of the plumbers did not do a satisfactory job.

If the councillors were in the know of who was executing the task, accountability would be there and quality of work would be ensured.
