Prior to the onset of monsoon, the Coimbatore Corporation has taken up cleaning the tanks under its control. According to the sources, the civic body began cleaning tanks in February this year, starting with the Singanallur Tank.
It then extended the work to the tanks to remove them of water hyacinth and also the entry of inlet channels. Thus far the civic body had cleaned Singanallur Tank, Narasampathy Tank, Kurichi Tank, Krishnampathy Tank and a couple of other tanks.
It was continuing the work in Selvampathy Tank, Valangulam and Kumarasamy Tank (Muthannan Kulam) with General Funds. The sources said that the civic body had so far spent a little over Rs. 2 crore to clean the tanks.
The work under progress in the three tanks would be completed at the earliest so as to ready the tanks to receive the South West Monsoon rains.
But sceptics say that the civic body had ill-spent the money as water hyacinth would grow again as sewage continued to flow into the tank.
Unless it prevented flow of sewage, there could be no permanent solution.
