Congress may field either R. Chinnaiyan or Pachamuthu for contesting the election to the Coimbatore Mayor's post. The party workers arrived at the names at a meeting held in the presence of the party observer, an MLC from Andhra Pradesh, on Monday.

Mr. Chinnaiyan is the party's urban district president and Mr. Pachamuthu, a confidant of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.V. Thangkabalu.

The party unit here has also finalised the names of candidates who will contest in the 100 wards of the Coimbatore Corporation. Of those, sitting councillors R. Ramasamy, P. Shobana, V.K.S.K. Senthilkumar, K. Srinivasan and R. Gayathri have found a place.

Mayor R. Venkatachalam has opted out of the race and so has M. Krishnamurthy, who represented the old Corporation Ward 11.

Latha Thirumugham, wife of R.S. Thirumugham, who represented old Corporation Ward 33, also finds a mention in the list.
