Conditional bail for 3 police personnel

October 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - COIMBATORE:

Principal District Sessions Judge Pongiappan on Friday granted conditional bail to three police personnel, including a police inspector, who were recently arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on charges of custodial and sexual torture of a woman.

The Udumalpet police took into custody a 55-year old woman for questioning in connection with the murder of a 65-year old woman at Narayanan Colony in Udumalpet on August 8.

The woman moved a petition before the Madras High Court, alleging sexual torture in custody.

The court, besides ordering compensation to the petitioner, directed the CBI to look into her complaint. Subsequently, the agency arrested a sub-inspector of police Vijayakumar (32) and constables Tilak Kumar (31) and Ranganayakam (31) and sent them to the Coimbatore Central Prison. The three filed a bail application before a sessions court and it came up for hearing on Friday.

Seeking bail for the three, counsel M. Appusamy contended that the police personnel never indulged in any sexual abuse and the case registered against them was false.

As there was no objection from CBI, the judge granted them bail on condition that they should appear before the Chief Judicial Magistrate court every day and sign the register.
