Summer camps help children to engage themselves productively for a few hours. Besides visiting relatives and friends, a few parents prefer to send their children to summer camps.
The concept of summer camps has gained popularity in recent years. The camps basically focus on improving handwriting, spoken English, Abacus, learning handicrafts and calligraphy which is conducted for about two to four weeks.
R. Ambika, who runs a pre-school, starts preparing for summer camps at least three months ahead. From mid-April, she is assisted by two teachers in conducting summer classes for children aged between two to eight years.
The children learn to sing, dance, make craft work and swim. She says that apart from helping children learn new skills, parents also send the children to these camps so that they get used to the school routine.
S. Anand, another co-ordinator of the summer camps, says that the advantage for the students is that they can choose the area they wanted to be trained in and get a certificate at the end of the course.
Many who conduct these camps have flexible joining and completion dates so that children can miss a class or two and go on a holiday with their family and still complete the course.
According to S. Anandhi, a parent, parents prefer to send the children to summer camps so that they can be equipped with more skills, work in a team and bring out their creativity.
