The University Grants Commission has asked colleges to observe International Yoga Day on June 21.

In a communication sent to universities and also deemed universities, UGC Secretary Jaspal S. Sandhu has suggested the universities and colleges celebrate the day in a befitting manner by having a demonstration by yoga practitioners, distributing prizes to best participants, organising an exhibition on yogic postures and conducting essay competitions.

He has also asked the institutions to send a mail on the celebrations to the UGC.

A few private colleges here said that they were yet to receive the communication from the UGC. As and when they received the instruction, they would abide by it. Those that received the communication said that they would observe the International Yoga Day but would have to wait till the academic year began to draw up plans.

As colleges were under vacation, they wanted the faculty and students to return to the new academic year and then would conduct the programme, they added.
