‘There are some issues and efforts are on to sort these out’

Finalisation of the revised Master Plan for Coimbatore is likely to get further delayed with no clarity on the status of the plan.

An official from the Local Planning Authority (LPA) said the government had raised some queries and the replies would be sent soon. A consultant was also involved in the draft plan preparation and it was submitted to the government. There were some issues and efforts were on to sort these out, the official said.

District Collector K. Rajamani, who is also the chairman of the LPA, said he would go through the draft plan. “Coimbatore is a fast growing industrial city. There needs to be a frame work along with the Master Plan to take the city forward. There should be inputs from all the stakeholders and the plan should be flexible for regular revision. It cannot be a one-time document. It should be a live document,” he said.

K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, said the government should expedite the process and finalise the Master Plan. Works were on since 2005 for the draft plan. Every time there was a delay, reasons were given for it. As it had been more than 20 years since the existing Master Plan was prepared, those who wanted land reclassification were approaching the government and getting individual orders for it. If the Master Plan was revised according to the current developments, there would be no problem in land reclassification. The government should remove all the bottlenecks and finalise the plan at the earliest, he said.

Mr. Kathirmathiyon also pointed out that there should be a re-look at the Scheme Road proposals. Those that were very old and not feasible now should be removed and new proposals should be drafted. This should reflect in the Master Plan.
