The Principal Subordinate Court, Coimbatore, has directed two Sri Lankan nationals, who were involved in an armed robbery case reported in 1990, to appear before it on June 6, failing which they will be declared as proclaimed offenders.
The Bazaar Street police said the court issued the directions to Sri Lankan nationals, Leema alias Magendran and Raj alias Anantharaj, who were arrested for robbing a vegetable trader of ₹35,010 and his scooter after firing at him.
According to the police, the accused shot at K. Seeniappan while taking away his scooter in which he had kept the money. The incident happened on the night of March 26, 1990 when he was returning home after the day’s business. Around 8.45 p.m., he parked the scooter in front of Makaliamman temple and went inside for darshan. When he came out after hearing the sound of someone trying to start his scooter, the accused shot at his shoulder and escaped.
The police arrested the duo on January 2, 1991 and filed a chargesheet against them on June 25 the same year. They came out on conditional bail on July 28, 1992 and remained at large from August 18, 1992, the police said. Though the Principal Subordinate Court issued warrants against the accused in 1992, the accused continued to remain at large, said the police.
