The Coimbatore Corporation will develop Kurichi Lake and its surroundings at ₹ 52 crore under Smart Cities Mission, said Corporation Commissioner Sravan Kumar Jatavath here on Tuesday.

Addressing members of Round Table India following the inauguration of the renovated clock tower, he said that lake restoration and rejuvenation was a major theme of Coimbatore Smart City Project. A Government Order issued on November 7 gave the lease of Kurichi Lake to the Corporation for a period of 90 years.

In a release, Mr. Jatavath stated Coimbatore stood first in the implementation of projects under Smart Cities Mission, with Smart City projects worth ₹1,000 crore being under way.

On the long-pending demand for the expansion of Coimbatore International Airport, Mr. Jatavath said that the expansion would commence soon. He added that the city would soon have improved connectivity with the countries in the Western part of the world for better business and job opportunities.

Regarding the 24x7 drinking water supply project, Mr. Jatavath said that there were “unnecessary rumours” about the project and that it would benefit people of Coimbatore city, the release said.
