Coimbatore Corp to lease land to sports development authority

Taking a step further towards realising the dream of constructing an indoor stadium and a swimming pool in the Coimbatore Prison complex, the Coimbatore Corporation will handover 5.63 acre of the prison land on lease to Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu.

The decision to handover the land follows a State Government Order.

The Corporation at its Council meeting on Wednesday last, placed the Government Order that said that following the transfer of land measuring 45.25 acre from the Prisons Department to the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department for the development of ‘Semmozhi Poonga’, very little progress was made.

To make effective use of the land, the Corporation requested that a portion of the land be used for the purpose of constructing indoor stadium and swimming pool.

Based on the request, the Government had ordered the change in land use pattern and allowed the Corporation to lease the land to the Authority with necessary conditions.

Based on the Order, the Corporation Council passed a resolution leasing the land to the Authority for 10 years and asking it to pay a nominal lease amount of Rs. 10,000 for an acre with scope for periodical revision.

The Corporation also said that in using the facilities at the proposed stadium, the Corporation schools should be given preference.

This would allow the Authority to build the stadium and swimming pool, for which the Government had allocated Rs. 3.85 crore.
