Coimbatore commuters happy with revised auto fare

Efforts taken to implement fixed autorickshaw fares have paid rich dividends with a good number of commuters claiming that the autorickshaws that they hired did not fleece them. A resident of Sreepathi Nagar near Ramanathapuram said that she was surprised when the driver asked only Rs. 35 to drop her at Perks School from her house.

“Earlier they demanded more than Rs. 50. Some drivers would even charge Rs. 100,” she said.

Autorickshaw driver Manian of Ramanathapuram said that he charges according to the revised fare. The new fare system was profitable only if there were reasonable trips, he said. Another driver Rangarajan said that implementation of the new fares has put an end to the arguments that drivers and commuters had in the yesteryears.

“In fact some passengers were so happy that they paid me more than the meter fare. We would have to wait for a month to see if the fares are feasible,” he added.

However, another commuter claimed that she was fleeced by an autorickshaw driver. “The driver charged Rs. 120 for a trip from Sharadambal temple to Perks School, and said that he could not charge according to the meter as it was not recalibrated,” she said.
