CM inaugurates check dams through video conferencing


Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Tuesday inaugurated the renovated Mariamman Kovil Pallam dam near Palayampudur village here through video conferencing.

A release from the district administration said that the dam was renovated at a cost of ₹2.95 crore. District Collector S. Malarvizhi, A. Govindasami, MLA, and other senior officials took part in the event held at Palayampudur near Nallampalli.

Ms. Malarvizhi said that agriculture works are under way for over two lakh acres in the district. In a release, she said that water bodies like Annasagaram, Pidamaneri and Sogathur in the district has filled up in the recent rain, thus improving the ground water levels in the vicinity and in farm wells and borewells. She added that water level in the water bodies here has improved due to Kudimaramathu works.

Mr. Palaniswami also inaugurated a check dam constructed across Thenpannai River in Pochampalli here. The check dam was constructed by the Public Works Department to improve ground water levels here. According to a release, the administrative sanction for the construction of the check dam was received in November 2018 at a cost of ₹9.24 crore and works begun in February this year.

According to a release, 3.56 million cubic feet of water could be stored here. This would improve water levels at 34 farm wells and nearly 1107 acres of agriculture land could be irrigated through this, a release said. The check dam would also improve water levels at two borewells which is used for drinking water supply in three nearby villages.
