Incessant rain that lashed the city on Tuesday noon paralysed life with many roads closed to traffic due to inundation.

Hampered

Normal life was thrown out of gear as rain hampered the movement of students and people going about their routine work.

Water-logging in many areas forced motorists to take alternative routes or wait for the water to recede to pass through.

Even some major roads were closed for some time due to water-logging.

Long rows of vehicles used narrow by-lanes as alternatives routes and this led to traffic snarls.

The non-stop rain added to the woes of the motorists, especially those on two-wheelers.

The roads that witnessed flooding were Lakshmi Mills Junction, Avanashi Road, Women's Polytechnic Junction, North Coimbatore and Avanashi Road flyover, Mettupalayam Road, Nanjundapuram Road, Ramanathapuram Junction and Lanka Corner.

Shelter

Water-logging in low-lying areas and unauthorised settlements made life miserable for residents, forcing them to take shelter in nearby schools and marriage halls.

There was also apprehension among residents that overflowing sewer water could lead to waterborne diseases.

Many were upset that the situation was aggravated by the poor drainage system and unplanned and incomplete works going on in the city.

Complaints

Meanwhile, the Corporation has received more than 50 complaints, most of it related to drainage.

Special teams have been pressed into service to remove garbage clogging the waterways. They were also involved in getting rid of the debris lying by the side of many roads to make way for smooth traffic.

Areas that suffered due to unfinished drainage works were Bharathi Park, Sowripalayam Road, Meena Estate, Hindustan College area and Nallampalayam.

There were many cases of vehicles getting stuck in open manholes and deep potholes in areas like Lakshmi Nagar, vicinity of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, etc.

These instances added to the inconvenience because traffic was held up till the vehicles and people travelling in those vehicles were attended to.

Two deaths were reported in the city. A 73-year-old man was found dead just outside the hospital premises and another man, in his twenties and whose identity was not confirmed, reportedly lost his life after he fell into an open drainage covered by storm water.
