As part of protecting water bodies in the district, Olirum Erodu Foundation (OEF) on Tuesday began cleaning and deepening of a canal at Koramadai village in Anthiyur taluk at a cost of ₹ 5 lakh.

Work began in the presence of members of the foundation, farmers and villagers. A check dam was proposed to be constructed in the water body so that the water is stored and does not get wasted.

The foundation members said that the work will help the canal to enhance it storage capacity which will help in recharging the ground water level in the area. This will help the recharge of wells and borewells in the area for a long period so that drinking water problem does not arise, they added.

The foundation has so far cleaned 26 water bodies in the district including ponds, lakes, and canal. After cleaning, water level in many of them had improved solving the drinking water needs in the areas concerned.

The foundation has proposed to create or clean at least one water body in each village in the district.
