Urging the Municipal Corporation to fix the minimum wage for conservancy workers as per the State Government’s order, members of AITUC, affiliated to the Erode District Local Body Workers’ Association, submitted petition to the Corporation officials here on Tuesday.

Led by its president S. Chinnasamy and secretary R. Maniyan, the petition said that there are 1,500 workers involved in sweeping, disease control, pump operation, garbage collection and other activities in 60 wards. The job of over half of the employees are yet to be regularised and they continue to receive a meagre wage of ₹ 413 per day. They wanted minimum wage of ₹ 18,000 per month, regularise the work of persons who had done 480 days of work as per the government order, equal pay for equal work and appointing workers in lieu of increase in population.

They said that the Government Order No 62 dated October 11, 2017, had fixed the wage for workers in different categories, corporation, municipality, town panchayat and panchayats.

Also, they should be provided dearness allowance, the petition said. They also added that though the minimum wage details were released in gazette, the corporation fails to implement it and provides only the meagre wage. Hence, they urged the civic body to fix the minimum wages to the workers and clear the outstanding dues also.
