Tensed moments prevailed at Kalapatty here on Saturday after a group of Hindu outfits vandalised a newly-constructed church.
Members of a Hindu outfit have been protesting against the construction of CSI Christ Church.
A small church was existing on a piece of 25 cents from 1948. A temple was also located close by. With the permission of the District Collector and the local body construction of a bigger church began.
A group of Hindu outfits moved a court in Coimbatore, but the church authorities obtained permission from Madras High Court to construct the church.
The court had directed the police to provide protection to the church.
The church was dedicated on Wednesday amidt protest from members of the Hindu outfit, who are said to not from that locality.
On Saturday, a group of around 15 people pushed away the policemen on guard, damaged the compound wall, main door, furniture, and the alter of the church.
