Chamber seeks investment zone in Coimbatore

July 07, 2012 12:32 pm | Updated 12:32 pm IST - COIMBATORE:

The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, has appealed to the State Government to take necessary measures for creation of National Manufacturing and Investment Zone in Coimbatore.

This was one of the resolutions passed by the chamber at its annual general meeting held here on Friday.

The Union Ministry of Commerce plans to create seven such zones in the country. It will boost industrial growth in the country. The State Government should take up with the Central Government and create one such facility in the State, especially in Coimbatore.

The district is known for its economic activity and hence requires planned development of its infrastructure.

A Greater Coimbatore Development Authority should be formed for this purpose. An industrial estate should be developed in Coimbatore for micro, small and medium-scale enterprises. Though industrial activity is growing, no industrial estate has been developed here for several years.

Accommodation facilities should be created for those employed in the industries here.

A scheme should be introduced for development of affordable housing here. The industrial training institutes should be given a boost with support from private partners.

Speaking at the meeting, president of the chamber M. Krishnan said the chamber had taken up several activities during the last two years for branding Coimbatore. It took up programmes related to sports development, healthcare, and infrastructure.
