Contests held, prizes distributed; cultural programmes organised

The three-day Kongu Naattu Velaan and Kalnadai Thiruvizha (Agri and livestock fest) concluded on Sunday at Pollachi. Contests were held under various categories for cattle for the second day on Sunday and cultural programmes were also organised. Prizes were distributed to the winners.

On Saturday, there was a huge response to the event. The fifth edition of the Vanavarayar Foundation’s Kongu Naatu Velaan and Kaalnadai Thiruvizha saw farmers showcasing their cattle, goats, and horses to win prizes in the contests organised.

There were about 500 Kangayam cattle with their farmer families as the most esteemed participants. The Kangayam is a prized indigenous breed and the event has proven to be one-of-a-kind platform to showcase the indigenous breed. Women farmers too participated with their cattle. This livestock heritage fair had 15 women farmers among the 500 registered Kangayam cattle farmers.

Apart from the regulars, the KVKT 2019 had some surprise exhibits. One was an antique Ferguson tractor from Kalipalayam.

Harshavardhanan, a dwarf breed conservationist from Nadupuni, participated in the fair. A business management graduate, Mr. Harshavardhanan researched dwarf breed livestock for over three years before he plunged into conservation, upkeep and protection of dwarf breed livestock. The morning of the fair hosted local performing arts and tribal dance. The festival aims to celebrate livestock, farmers, agrarian practices and to create cultural awareness.
