Cases registered against two for cheating medical aspirants

The Central Crime Branch of City Police has registered two separate cases against two persons for allegedly defrauding ₹50 lakh from parents of MBBS aspirants in the name of arranging admission in medical colleges in Karnataka.

Sanjeev Kumar (44), a native of Thindal in Erode, and B.C. Thimaiah from Madikeri in Kodagu district of Karnataka, were booked based on complaints filed by the parents of two medical aspirants.

In the first case, the accused allegedly collected ₹25 lakh from Nanda Vijayan from Misery Hill in Udhagamandalam in the name of arranging MBBS admission for the latter’s son at K.V.G. Medical College and Hospital at Sullia in Karnataka. The alleged cheating took place between June and September in 2016.

Similarly, the accused duped R.M. Alagesan, a resident of K.R. Puran near Pappanaickenpalayam, of ₹25 lakh by promising to arrange MBBS seat at KS Hegde Medical Academy, Mangaluru, during the same period.

In June this year, the District Crime Branch had booked the duo for defrauding ₹57 lakh from the parents of two medical aspirants. The accused were arrested by the Ullal police in Mangaluru in 2016 based on complaints filed by victims from Coimbatore. They were later released on bail.

Liquor seized from restaurant

The police on Sunday arrested three persons in connection with illegal stocking of liquor for sale at a restaurant at Pappampatti, near Sulur.

Sai Prakash (45), from SIHS Colony near Singanallur, Saravanan (42), from Ottanchathuram near Dindigul, and Kutty, from Sulur, were held following a raid at the restaurant, said the police.

Officers from the Prohibition Enforcement Wing conducted searches at the restaurant. They seized 115 bottles (750 ml) of liquor that were reportedly sourced from Defence canteen, 30 bottles (750 ml) liquor sourced from Puducherry, 28 bottles (650 ml) of beer and 25 bottles (180 ml) of liquor sourced from TASMAC outlets.

Man struck by lightning

A 25-year-old man from Samaiyampalayam in Coimbatore died after he was struck by lightning on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as G. Illaiyaraja, employee of a private company at Samaiyampalayam. The incident happened at 5.30 p.m. when he was at work at the terrace of a building.
