Bus service to 15 tribal hamlets in Bargur hills that was suspended for over a month due to poor roads resumed here on Monday.

People and students in these hamlets were depending on pick-up vans to reach Thamaraikarai, Bargur and Anthiyur till last years as their demand of operating a bus to their hamlets fulfilled after the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation Limited bus started operating a bus from Anthiyur to Kongadai from February 2018. Six months ago, the contractor, who maintains the road, began works to construct culverts at 14 locations between Thamaraikarai and Thalakarai Junction.

During heavy rain last months in the hill area, the service roads that were laid at the construction area turned slushy and the bus got struck in slush. Thereafter, the bus service was suspended forcing the people and students to depend on the pick-up vans. The van drivers also fear in operating their vehicles as Regional Transport Officer and the police warned them not to carry people in their vehicles. Despite the risk involved, pick-up vans were operated which is the only mode of transportation available for the people.

Petitions were submitted to the district administration on the battered road conditions and the Collector had asked officials to expedite works and make the roads motorable. Repair works were carried out and bus service resumed from Monday.
