The State Highways Department has started works to construct a bridge at the railway crossing at Karamadai.
An official of the department told The Hindu on Saturday that works were on during the last three months for an alternative road. This was completed and traffic was diverted to it from Friday. Efforts were on to finish the bridge work in 15 months, though 18 months have been allotted. The proposal was to construct a three lane bridge (12 m wide) for 750 m and have service roads on either side. The project involved land acquisition. If land was acquired at the earliest, it will help expedite the bridge works, the official said.
