The State Highways Department has almost completed the second road over bridge (ROB) near Textool (an industrial unit) in the city and it is expected to be opened for use soon.

An official of the department told The Hindu on Thursday that the Rs. 20-crore project started in 2013 and was nearing completion now.

Bitumen topping on the service lane and the main carriageway are the pending works. It is a two-lane road over bridge for one-way traffic and is 262.5 m long and 8.5 m wide. Metal works are over on the main carriageway and bitumen topping needs to be taken up. Vehicles are permitted to use the ROB temporarily now. Another road over bridge, which is already in use, will also be for one-way traffic. This will bring down traffic congestion. The department had also taken up some widening works and bitumen topping on the approach roads and these too need to be completed, the official said. The NH wing of the department would complete widening of the road to Ganapathy. Works for Rathinapuri and Irugur ROB were also nearing completion, the official added. According to K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, several road over bridge projects proposed in the city are getting delayed or not even taking off because of land acquisition problems. The bridges will help ease traffic problems. The State Highways Department should comply with the schedules for all the projects, he said.
