Over the next 15 days, Coimbatore Corporation staff and a few others it has engaged on contract will go door-to-door to over 1.25 lakh houses to verify the details the occupants have furnished in their application for inclusion in the below poverty line (BPL) list.
Sources in the Corporation said that after it uploaded online all the applications it had received two months ago, the State Government had numbered the applications and returned them to the local body concerned for field verification.
Field verification
Confirming the receipt of applications and the government’s instruction for field verification, a senior Corporation official said the government had mandated the civic body to complete the verification process within 15 days.
The sources said the civic body would deploy its sanitary inspectors, domestic breeding checkers and animators, all of who number around 600, to complete the process in time.
In their application, the applicants had furnished their family details, the name of the bank they bank with, account number, IFSC code, Aadhaar number, the type of house – rented or owned, the type of building – thatched, tile-roofed or concrete roofed, education qualification of the breadwinner, education qualification and details of moveable and immoveable assets.
The staff or people carrying out the inspection would have to check and verify the details furnished and if they find a few entries to be incorrect, they would have to mark those and also record their observation, the sources said.
The State Government’s move followed a large number of people applying for inclusion in the BPL list, in fact twice the number of entries it had in the revised BPL list of 2008. The number of applications received was close to 1.50 lakh but the 2008 list showed only 64,898 families in the list.
Thereafter, the government called for fresh applications and asked local bodies to upload the details. The sources said that once the Corporation and other local bodies verified and validated the list, the State Government could use it to disburse the one-time special financial assistance of ₹ 2,000, which the Chief Minister had announced on February 11.
