Boy dies consuming vulcanising paste

A 14-year-old boy Suryakumar of Devampalayam admitted at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) after consuming vulcanising paste died on Monday.

It is learnt that the boy had accidentally consumed four tubes of the paste kept at a workshop.

Students picket hotel

College students on Monday evening thronged a star hotel in Race Course saying that some persons who harassed a girl student have entered the hotel.

Inquiries by police revealed that the persons were from Karnataka who had come for interior-decoration for an event being organised by a private firm at the hotel on Tuesday.

Three surrender

Vijayakumar, Sivakumar, and Kaniamudhu – accused of attack on a hotel on Sathyamangalam Road on Friday night – surrendered before the Judicial Magistrate-II on Monday. Various Hindu organisations had called for a hartal on Friday in protest against the series of attack their functionaries in Coimbatore and the Nilgiris. Some persons hurled bottles filled with kerosene at the hotel. Three persons were arrested earlier.

Five held

The police on Sunday arrested Ponnusamy (62) and four others on charges of indulging in gambling and seized Rs. 3,000 from them.

Protest

Angry relatives of a deceased on Monday staged a protest demanding the closure of a Tasmac liquor outlet on Thadagam Road.

The police said that Anandakumar (36) who was addicted to liquor had stopped going for work and was taking money from wife Deepa and drink. Anandakumar was found hanging on Monday.

Angry relatives kept the body in front of the Tasmac shop and demanded that it be closed immediately.

Strike at market

Strike by workers, including 500 women, involved in the segregation and packing of potatoes at the Mettuppalayam vegetable mundy has resulted in over 1,500 tonnes of potatoes piling up.
