Ban on red earth mining sought

Tension prevailed in the gram sabha held at Chinna Thadagam panchayat on Thursday after several participants raised the issue of uncontrolled red earth mining in Thadagam valley and environmental pollution associated with the operation of brick kilns.

While a section of participants raised the issue and wanted a resolution to be passed in the meeting to ban red earth mining, representatives of brick kiln industry objected it stating that the topic did not require a discussion at the gram sabha. This led to a verbal altercation between the two sides.

A section of people also accused the panchayat officials of creating false entry in the registry. According to them, the gram sabha scheduled to take place on June 28 this year was not held due to difference of opinion among participants. However, the registry kept at the gram sabha held on Thursday showed that a meeting was held on June 28.
