Less than 500 cows arrived at the market when compared to the normal arrival of over 1,000

Increase in procurement price of milk and release of water for irrigation in canals led to drop in arrival of cattle at the weekly shandy at Karungalpalayam here recently.

The shandy that attracts sellers and traders from various districts and from other States is held on Thursdays. Traders from Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh visit the shandy frequently and purchase cattle and transport in lorries and vehicles. Due to drought and increase in price of fodder, arrival of cattle in the market in the past months was high. But on Thursday, arrival of cattle was less when compared to the usual arrival. Farmers said that the State government’s hike in the procurement price for cow and buffalo milk recently has helped them to reduce their loss. Also, water was released for irrigation in Kalingarayan Canal, Lower Bhavani Project canal and Thadapalli – Arakankottai canals in the district. Hence, farming activities have begun in which cow were used. Also, fodder availability will not be a major issue in the coming days, they added.

Shandy manager Murugan said that less than 500 cows arrived at the market when compared to the normal arrival of over 1,000. He added that 85% of the cows were sold during the day.
